Cervical cancer, the cancer of the mouth of the womb (bachchedani ka munh), is one of the most common cancers in women in India. Many women in Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Mirzapur and Chitrakoot hide symptoms such as unusual bleeding or discharge out of shyness, or because they think it is a "normal women's problem". By the time they see a doctor, the disease may have grown. The good news is that cervical cancer can be prevented and, when found early, treated well. This guide explains the warning signs, the tests and the treatment at ZenHeal Cancer Hospital, Prayagraj.

What causes cervical cancer?

Almost all cervical cancers are caused by long-lasting infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV spreads through sexual contact and is very common; in most women the body clears it. When it persists for years, it can slowly change the cells of the cervix, first into pre-cancer and then cancer. This slow change gives a long window for screening to catch it early.

Other risk factors include early marriage and early first pregnancy, many pregnancies, smoking, a weak immune system (such as with HIV) and never having had a screening test.

Warning signs women should not ignore

See a doctor if you have any of these:

  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Bleeding between periods, or periods that become much heavier or longer
  • Any bleeding after menopause, even spotting
  • White discharge that is foul-smelling, watery or blood-stained and does not settle with treatment
  • Pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis or back, or pain during intercourse
  • Later signs: swelling of the legs, difficulty passing urine or stool, weight loss

These signs can have other causes, such as infection or a polyp. But they always need an examination, not just repeated tablets.

Screening: catch it before it becomes cancer

Women aged 30 and above should have regular screening, even without symptoms:

  • VIA test – the cervix is examined after applying a vinegar solution; quick and widely used in India.
  • Pap smear – a few cells are taken from the cervix and examined under a microscope.
  • HPV test – checks for high-risk HPV types.

The HPV vaccine protects girls and young women before exposure. Love Heals Cancer has a simple Hindi guide on the HPV vaccine.

Tests at ZenHeal Prayagraj

If you have symptoms or an abnormal screening result, the doctor may advise:

  1. Per speculum and pelvic examination – to look at the cervix.
  2. Biopsy of the abnormal area – the only test that confirms cancer. Our biopsy guide explains what happens.
  3. MRI of the pelvis – shows how far the tumour has spread locally.
  4. CT scan or PET-CT in selected cases, to check the rest of the body.
  5. Blood tests, including kidney function, before treatment.

Bring every earlier report, ultrasound and biopsy slide or block if the lab gave it to you.

Treatment options

Treatment depends mainly on the stage. Your oncologist explains the plan in simple Hindi or English before anything begins.

When radiotherapy is part of the plan

For many women with cervical cancer, especially when the tumour is larger or has spread beyond the cervix, doctors may advise radiotherapy together with chemotherapy. If radiotherapy is advised as part of your plan, your ZenHeal doctor will explain why and guide you on where it can be given. At Prayagraj, Dr. Mohommad Aqueel, Radiation Oncologist and Chemotherapist (MD Radiotherapy, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur), whose areas of focus include gynaecological cancers, can explain the options.

Surgery

For some very early-stage cancers, surgery to remove the uterus, cervix and nearby tissue may be advised. Whether surgery is suitable depends on the stage, the size of the tumour and the woman's health. The doctor will explain which route is better for you.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is often given alongside other treatment, and sometimes on its own for advanced or recurrent disease. ZenHeal Prayagraj has a day-care chemotherapy unit, where doctors such as Dr. Yashpal Singh, Clinical Oncologist, give treatment. See chemotherapy in Prayagraj.

Supportive and palliative care

Control of bleeding and pain, treatment of anaemia, nutrition support and counselling are part of care at every stage.

Side effects and recovery

If pelvic radiotherapy is part of the plan, women may have tiredness, loose motions, burning urine and skin irritation. These usually settle within weeks after treatment ends. The team may advise vaginal dilators and gentle exercises after treatment to prevent narrowing. Ask openly about sexual health and periods; these are normal questions.

Cost of cervical cancer treatment in Prayagraj

The cost depends on the stage and on which treatments are needed. ZenHeal gives an estimate after the doctor reviews your reports.

  • Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) is accepted for eligible patients.
  • Cashless insurance is handled by our help desk.
  • Our counsellors and Love Heals Cancer can guide you on financial support and relief funds.

Your first visit: what to bring and what happens

You do not need a referral letter. Call +91 99307 09000, tell the team the symptom or diagnosis, your district and the reports you already have, and ask for a same-day appointment at ZenHeal Prayagraj. On the day, bring:

  • All biopsy, Pap smear or VIA reports, and slides or blocks if your earlier lab gave them
  • Ultrasound, MRI or CT reports with CDs or films
  • Recent blood tests (haemoglobin, kidney function) and any discharge summaries
  • A written list of current medicines, including Ayurvedic or home remedies
  • Aadhaar card and Ayushman Bharat card if you have one, or your insurance card

The doctor takes a history, examines you privately, reviews every report and explains what is known and which tests are still needed. Before you leave, you should know the likely stage or the next test, the treatment being considered and the next date.

Support for women and families

Many women look after the home, children and elders while they are on treatment. Ask a family member to come to appointments and share household work during the weeks of treatment. Husbands and families can help most by listening without blame; cervical cancer is caused by a common virus, not by anything a woman "did wrong". Love Heals Cancer offers free counselling for women and caregivers on the same helpline.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • What stage is the cancer, and what does the MRI show?
  • Which treatment do I need, and in what order?
  • How many chemotherapy cycles are planned?
  • If radiotherapy is advised, where will it be given?
  • How will treatment affect my periods, bladder, bowel and sexual life?
  • Should my daughters get the HPV vaccine?
