Families from Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Mirzapur, Bhadohi and the Rewa–Satna side of Madhya Pradesh often search for "pancreatic cancer treatment in Prayagraj" after a CT scan mentions a "mass in the head of pancreas", or after a family member develops jaundice without pain. Pancreatic cancer is one of the more difficult cancers to find early, because the pancreas lies deep inside the abdomen and early symptoms are vague. Acting quickly once it is suspected makes a real difference to the treatment choices available. This guide explains the signs, the tests, the treatment options at ZenHeal Cancer Hospital, Prayagraj, and how to get a same-day appointment.

What is the pancreas and what is pancreatic cancer?
The pancreas is a gland about the length of a hand, lying behind the stomach. It makes digestive juices and hormones such as insulin. Most pancreatic cancers are adenocarcinomas that start in the cells lining the pancreatic ducts. A smaller group, called neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), behave differently and often grow more slowly. Your biopsy report will say which type you have, and this changes the treatment plan.
Doctors also describe where the tumour is: in the head (closest to the bile duct and intestine), the body or the tail. Tumours in the head often cause jaundice early because they press on the bile duct.
Warning signs you should not ignore
See a doctor without delay if you notice:
- Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice), especially without pain, with dark urine and pale stools
- Itching all over the body along with jaundice
- Pain in the upper abdomen that goes through to the back, often worse after food or when lying flat
- Loss of appetite, early fullness and weight loss without trying
- Oily, pale, foul-smelling stools that are hard to flush
- New diabetes after the age of 50, or diabetes that suddenly becomes hard to control
- Nausea, vomiting or a feeling of heaviness after meals
None of these signs alone means cancer. But if they last more than two weeks, or if a scan has already shown a pancreatic mass, it is worth getting a specialist opinion rather than waiting.
Who is at higher risk?
- Smokers and tobacco users, including chewing tobacco
- People with long-standing (chronic) pancreatitis
- Obesity and long-standing diabetes
- Heavy alcohol use, which also causes pancreatitis
- A family history of pancreatic cancer or certain inherited conditions
- Age above 50
Stopping tobacco and alcohol and keeping a healthy weight lower the risk.
Tests the oncologist may advise
Your first consultation at ZenHeal Prayagraj starts with a detailed history and examination. Depending on your reports, the doctor may advise:
- Ultrasound of the abdomen – often the first test, but the pancreas can be hard to see on ultrasound.
- Pancreas-protocol contrast CT scan – the key test. It shows the tumour and, importantly, whether it touches major blood vessels, which decides whether surgery is possible.
- MRI/MRCP – useful for the bile ducts and for small lesions.
- Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) with biopsy – a camera passed through the mouth that takes a needle sample from the pancreas.
- Blood tests – liver function, bilirubin, blood sugar and CA 19-9, a tumour marker that helps in planning and follow-up but cannot alone confirm cancer.
- PET-CT in selected cases, to look for spread.
If you already have reports from another centre, bring all of them, including scan CDs. The doctor will tell you whether any test needs to be repeated.
How doctors stage pancreatic cancer
For planning, doctors usually place the cancer into one of four groups:
- Resectable – can be removed by surgery.
- Borderline resectable – touches nearby blood vessels; chemotherapy first may make surgery possible.
- Locally advanced – involves major vessels so surgery is not possible now.
- Metastatic – has spread to the liver, lungs or abdominal lining.
Knowing the group helps the family understand why a particular plan is advised.
Treatment options at ZenHeal Prayagraj
Surgery
For tumours in the head of the pancreas, the standard operation is a Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy), which removes the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, the gallbladder and the end of the bile duct. Tumours in the body or tail may need a distal pancreatectomy. These are major operations, and the surgical oncology team assesses carefully whether the patient is fit for surgery. In Prayagraj, surgical decisions involve doctors such as Dr. Vishal Kewlani, Surgical Oncologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is used in almost every stage: before surgery to shrink the tumour (neoadjuvant), after surgery to lower the chance of the cancer coming back (adjuvant), and as the main treatment when surgery is not possible. ZenHeal Prayagraj has a day-care chemotherapy unit, and medical oncology care is led by doctors such as Dr. Mohommad Aqueel, Oncologist and Chemotherapist.
Targeted therapy and genetic testing
Some patients benefit from testing the tumour or blood for specific gene changes. When such a change is found, targeted medicines may be an option. Your oncologist will tell you whether testing is useful in your case.
Relief of jaundice, pain and digestion problems
When jaundice is caused by a blocked bile duct, an endoscopic stent can relieve itching, improve appetite and make chemotherapy safer. Pain can be well controlled with medicines and, in some cases, a nerve block. Pancreatic enzyme capsules taken with meals help digestion and weight. Nutrition support and palliative care are part of the plan from the start.
How much does pancreatic cancer treatment cost in Prayagraj?
There is no single price, because the cost depends on the stage, the type of surgery, the chemotherapy plan and the length of hospital stay. The ZenHeal team gives a written estimate only after the doctor has reviewed your reports. Ways to reduce the burden:
- Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY): accepted for eligible patients, including card holders from Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
- Cashless insurance: our help desk handles pre-authorisation with most insurers.
- Government relief funds and NGO support: our counsellors and the non-profit Love Heals Cancer can guide you through financial support options.

Questions to ask your doctor
- Is the tumour resectable, borderline or advanced?
- Will chemotherapy be given before or after surgery?
- How will the jaundice and itching be relieved?
- Do I need pancreatic enzyme capsules, and how should I take them?
- How will diabetes or blood sugar be managed during treatment?
- Which parts of the treatment can be covered by Ayushman Bharat or insurance?
Diet and daily care
Eat small, frequent meals with protein at each meal, and take enzyme capsules exactly as prescribed with food. Limit very oily and fried food if it causes loose stools. Keep track of blood sugar, weight and stool pattern in a diary to show the doctor. Report fever, worsening jaundice, vomiting or severe pain without delay. Caregivers can find practical tips in the Love Heals Cancer guide to caring for a cancer patient at home.
Take the first step today
With pancreatic cancer, time matters. If you or a family member has painless jaundice, upper abdominal pain spreading to the back, unexplained weight loss or a scan showing a pancreatic mass, do not wait for symptoms to get worse.
