Many men in Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Mirzapur, Bhadohi and the Rewa–Satna side of Madhya Pradesh put up with urine problems for years, thinking they are just "old age". Families usually search for "prostate cancer treatment in Prayagraj" only after a PSA report comes back high, or after a man develops bone pain that does not go away. Prostate cancer often grows slowly, and many men live long, active lives with the right treatment and follow-up. The key is a clear diagnosis and a plan made by a cancer specialist. This guide explains the signs, the tests and the treatment options at ZenHeal Cancer Hospital, Prayagraj.

What is the prostate?
The prostate is a small gland in men, below the urinary bladder, that surrounds the urine passage (urethra). It grows with age, which is why many older men have a slow urine stream. This common, non-cancerous enlargement is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostate cancer is different: it is an abnormal growth of cells in the gland, which can stay in the prostate for a long time or, in some men, spread to lymph nodes and bones.
Symptoms to watch for
Early prostate cancer often causes no symptoms at all. When symptoms appear, they may include:
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Weak or interrupted stream, difficulty starting, or a feeling that the bladder has not emptied
- Burning or discomfort while passing urine
- Blood in urine or semen
- Pain in the back, hips or ribs that keeps coming back, which can be a sign of spread to bones
- Weakness in the legs, unexplained weight loss or tiredness
Most of these symptoms are caused by BPH or infection, not cancer. But they should be checked, especially in men over 50 or men with a family history of prostate cancer.
Who should get checked?
- Men over 50 with new urine symptoms
- Men over 45 whose father or brother had prostate cancer
- Men with persistent bone pain and no clear cause
- Men whose routine health check showed a raised PSA
Talk to your doctor about whether a PSA test is right for you; the decision depends on age, health and personal preference.
Tests the oncologist may advise
Your first consultation at ZenHeal Prayagraj starts with a detailed history and examination. Depending on what your reports show, the doctor may advise:
- PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test – a raised PSA is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis in itself.
- Digital rectal examination (DRE) – a quick examination that lets the doctor feel the prostate.
- MRI of the prostate (multiparametric MRI) – helps decide whether a biopsy is needed and where to take it.
- Prostate biopsy – the only way to confirm cancer. The report gives a Gleason score / Grade Group, which tells how aggressive the cancer looks.
- Bone scan, CT or PSMA PET-CT – to check for spread, depending on the PSA, Gleason score and symptoms.
- Kidney function and urine tests – important if urine flow is blocked.
If you already have reports from another centre, bring all of them, including the biopsy slides and blocks if available. You can read about biopsy reports in the Love Heals Cancer guide बायोप्सी रिपोर्ट कैसे समझें.
Understanding risk groups
Doctors combine the PSA level, the Gleason score / Grade Group and the scan findings to place prostate cancer in a low, intermediate or high-risk group, or to call it advanced (metastatic) if it has spread. This helps explain why one man may be advised close monitoring while another needs treatment straight away.
Treatment options at ZenHeal Prayagraj
Treatment is planned around the risk group, age, general health and the patient's own wishes. Your oncologist explains each option in simple Hindi or English.
Active surveillance
For some men with small, low-risk cancer, the safest plan may be regular monitoring with PSA tests, examinations and repeat MRI or biopsy, starting treatment only if the cancer changes. This avoids side effects of treatment that may not be needed.
Surgery
For cancer confined to the prostate in a fit patient, radical prostatectomy (removal of the prostate) is one option. The surgical oncology team, including doctors such as Dr. Vishal Kewlani, Surgical Oncologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, assesses whether surgery is suitable and discusses possible effects on urine control and sexual function.
Radiation therapy
Radiation is an established treatment for localised and locally advanced prostate cancer, often combined with hormone therapy. Your oncologist will explain whether it suits you and plan it with the radiation oncology team.
Hormone therapy (androgen deprivation therapy)
Prostate cancer cells usually need the male hormone testosterone to grow. Hormone therapy, given as injections, tablets or sometimes a minor surgery, lowers testosterone and can control the cancer for a long time. It is a mainstay for advanced disease and is often combined with other treatments. Newer hormone tablets are also used in selected patients.
Chemotherapy
For some men with advanced or hormone-resistant prostate cancer, chemotherapy adds benefit. ZenHeal Prayagraj has a day-care chemotherapy unit, and medical oncology care is led by doctors such as Dr. Mohommad Aqueel, Oncologist and Chemotherapist.
Bone health and symptom care
When cancer has reached the bones, medicines that strengthen bone, pain control, and calcium and vitamin D support help prevent fractures and keep the patient active. Palliative care and help with urine blockage are part of the plan at every stage.
How much does prostate cancer treatment cost in Prayagraj?
There is no single price, because the cost depends on the stage, the treatment chosen, the type of hormone medicine and how long it is needed. The ZenHeal team gives a written estimate only after the doctor has reviewed your reports. Ways to reduce the burden:
- Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY): accepted for eligible patients, including card holders from Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
- Cashless insurance: our help desk handles pre-authorisation with most insurers.
- Government relief funds and NGO support: the non-profit Love Heals Cancer can guide you on financial support for cancer patients.

Questions to ask your doctor
- What is my PSA, Gleason score / Grade Group and risk group?
- Has the cancer spread outside the prostate?
- Is active surveillance safe for me, or do I need treatment now?
- What are the side effects of each option on urine control and sexual health?
- How long will hormone therapy be needed, and how will my bones be protected?
- Which parts of the treatment can be covered by Ayushman Bharat or insurance?
Living well during treatment
Regular walking and light exercise help with tiredness and the side effects of hormone therapy, such as weight gain and loss of muscle. Eat plenty of vegetables, dal and whole grains, limit fried food, and stop tobacco. Keep a diary of PSA results and symptoms. Report sudden back pain with leg weakness, inability to pass urine or blood in urine straight away. Partners and families can find support through Love Heals Cancer's healing stories.
Take the first step today
Prostate cancer found early usually has more treatment choices. If you are over 50 with urine problems, have a raised PSA, or have persistent bone pain, get checked rather than waiting.
