Hearing the word "chemotherapy" can be frightening. Much of the fear comes from not knowing what actually happens. At ZenHeal Cancer Hospital in Varanasi and Prayagraj, most chemotherapy is given in day care: you come in, receive the treatment and go home the same day.

Before the session

  • Blood tests: usually done a day before or the same morning to check blood counts, liver and kidney function.
  • Eat light: a normal light meal such as dalia, khichdi or roti-sabzi is usually fine.
  • Wear loose clothes with sleeves that roll up easily.
  • Bring your file, medicines list, a water bottle, and one family member.

During the session

  1. A nurse checks weight, BP and temperature. Your dose depends on weight and height.
  2. The doctor reviews blood reports and confirms the plan.
  3. Medicines to prevent nausea and allergy are given first.
  4. Chemotherapy is given through a drip (IV), an injection or as tablets. A drip may take from under an hour to several hours.
  5. Tell the nurse at once if you feel itching, breathlessness, chest tightness or pain at the drip site.

Common side effects and home care

Side effect What helps
Nausea / vomiting Prescribed medicines, small frequent meals, avoid oily food
Tiredness Short rests, light walks, enough sleep
Mouth sores Soft food, salt-water rinses, avoid spicy food
Hair loss Depends on the drug; usually grows back after treatment
Low blood counts Hand-washing, avoid crowds, report fever

Not everyone gets every side effect, and many are manageable.

Cost and Ayushman Bharat

The cost depends on the drugs and the number of cycles, so the team gives an estimate after the oncologist plans your treatment. Eligible patients can use Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) or cashless insurance; our help desk will assist.
