Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in men in India, and it is often found late. In Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Mirzapur and Bhadohi, many patients first spend months on cough syrups or even TB medicines before anyone orders a CT scan. Bidi and cigarette smoking, years of cooking on chulha smoke and dust at work all add to the risk. This guide explains the warning signs, the tests and the treatment options for lung cancer at ZenHeal Cancer Hospital, Prayagraj, and how to get a same-day appointment.

What is lung cancer?
Lung cancer starts when cells in the lining of the airways or the lung tissue grow out of control and form a tumour. Doctors divide it into two main types:
- Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common type, which includes adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
- Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), which tends to grow faster and is closely linked to smoking.
The type, the stage and the results of tests on the tumour tissue decide which treatment is right. That is why a proper biopsy matters so much.
Symptoms you should not ignore
See a doctor if any of these last more than three weeks:
- A cough that does not go away, or a long-standing smoker's cough that changes
- Blood in the sputum, even a small streak
- Breathlessness while walking or climbing stairs that is new or getting worse
- Chest, shoulder or back pain that keeps coming back
- A hoarse voice for more than three weeks
- Loss of appetite, weight loss and unusual tiredness
- Repeated chest infections or pneumonia that does not clear fully
- Swelling of the face or neck, or new lumps above the collarbone
Most of these symptoms are caused by something other than cancer. What matters is that they are new, persistent or getting worse.
When "TB" is not TB
In eastern Uttar Pradesh, a cough with weight loss is often treated as tuberculosis, sometimes without a confirmed sputum test. TB is common and must be treated, but lung cancer can look similar on a chest X-ray. If there is no improvement after a few weeks of TB treatment, if the sputum test is negative, or if the X-ray shadow is growing, ask your doctor for a CT scan and a cancer specialist's opinion. Starting the right treatment early can change the options available.
Who has a higher risk?
- Current or past smokers of bidi, cigarettes or hookah, and people exposed to second-hand smoke
- Women who cooked for many years on wood, dung-cake or coal chulhas in poorly ventilated kitchens
- Workers exposed to dust, asbestos, silica or diesel fumes
- People with a family history of lung cancer, or past radiation to the chest
Stopping smoking at any age helps, including during treatment. Ask the team for support to quit.
Tests at ZenHeal Prayagraj
After a detailed history and examination, the oncologist may advise:
- Chest X-ray and contrast CT scan of the chest – to see the size and position of the tumour and nearby lymph nodes.
- Biopsy – usually a CT-guided needle biopsy or a sample taken during bronchoscopy. Only a biopsy confirms cancer and its type.
- Tests on the tumour tissue (biomarkers) – such as EGFR, ALK and PD-L1 for non-small cell lung cancer. These show whether targeted medicines or immunotherapy may help.
- PET-CT or other scans in selected cases, to check whether the disease has spread.
- Blood tests and lung function tests – to make sure the patient can safely receive treatment.
Bring all earlier X-rays, CT films and CDs, sputum and TB test reports, and any biopsy report. The doctor will tell you whether a test needs to be repeated.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the type and stage of the cancer, the biomarker results and the patient's general health and breathing. Your oncologist explains the plan in simple Hindi or English before anything begins.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is used for most stages of lung cancer, alone or with other treatments such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. ZenHeal Prayagraj has a day-care chemotherapy unit, so most cycles are given without an overnight stay. Chemotherapy at Prayagraj is planned by doctors such as Dr. Mohommad Aqueel, Radiation Oncologist and Chemotherapist (MBBS, KGMU Lucknow; MD Radiotherapy, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur), and Dr. Yashpal Singh, Clinical Oncologist. If radiotherapy is advised
For some patients, radiotherapy may be combined with chemotherapy, used when surgery is not suitable, or given to relieve symptoms such as pain, bleeding or breathlessness. If radiotherapy is advised as part of your plan, your ZenHeal doctor will explain why and guide you on where it can be given.
Targeted therapy and immunotherapy
If the biopsy shows certain changes, such as an EGFR mutation or ALK rearrangement, tablets that target these changes may be used. Immunotherapy may be advised for some patients based on PD-L1 and other factors. These treatments are not suitable for everyone, so testing comes first.
Surgery
For some early-stage lung cancers, surgery to remove the tumour is an option. The oncologist checks whether the patient's stage and lung function make surgery suitable and explains the next steps.
Supportive care
Draining fluid around the lung, oxygen when needed, breathing exercises, nutrition support and good pain control help patients feel better at every stage, not only at the end.
