Pain, vomiting, breathlessness, sleepless nights and weakness are often what families find hardest in cancer, sometimes more than the diagnosis itself. Palliative care is the medical speciality that treats exactly these problems. It is not "giving up", and it is not only for the last days. This guide explains what palliative care in Varanasi involves, who it is for, and how ZenHeal Cancer Hospital supports patients and their families.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is specialised medical care that relieves the symptoms and stress of a serious illness and improves quality of life for the patient and the family. It treats the person, not only the tumour. A palliative plan usually looks at:

  • Physical symptoms: pain, nausea and vomiting, constipation, breathlessness, loss of appetite, weakness, wounds and sleep problems.
  • Emotional health: fear, low mood and anxiety, for both the patient and the caregivers.
  • Practical needs: understanding the illness, planning care, paperwork and finances.
  • Family support: counselling, and guidance on caring for the patient at home.

Who needs palliative care?

Any person living with cancer who has troubling symptoms can benefit, at any stage. It is especially helpful when:

  • pain is not controlled with ordinary painkillers;
  • the patient cannot eat, is losing weight or is vomiting often;
  • there is breathlessness, swelling or a wound that will not heal;
  • treatment side effects are making daily life hard;
  • the cancer is advanced and the family wants to focus on comfort and dignity.

Palliative care can run alongside surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Patients who get good symptom control often cope better with their cancer treatment.

Cancer pain can be treated

Many families accept severe pain as part of cancer. It should not be. Most cancer pain can be brought under good control with the right medicines at the right doses, given by the clock rather than only when the pain becomes unbearable. Doctors use a step-by-step approach: simple painkillers, then stronger ones such as morphine when needed, plus medicines for nerve pain, bone pain and the side effects of painkillers.

About morphine: when it is prescribed and monitored by a doctor, morphine is a standard, safe medicine for cancer pain. Fear of addiction should not stop a patient from getting relief. Constipation is common and is prevented with laxatives from the first day. Never stop, start or change the dose on your own.

Other treatments also relieve symptoms. A short course of palliative radiotherapy can ease bone pain or stop bleeding; radiotherapy is available at ZenHeal Cancer Hospital in Varanasi and Prayagraj (see radiation therapy in Varanasi). Sometimes a small procedure or an operation relieves a blockage. Read more about surgical oncology at ZenHeal Varanasi.

Palliative care at ZenHeal Cancer Hospital, Varanasi

ZenHeal Varanasi is a 100-bed cancer-only hospital with a 10-bed ICU and 24×7 emergency support. Palliative care here covers pain and symptom relief, nutrition and counselling, family counselling and comfort-focused, quality-of-life care. The oncology team, including clinical oncologist Dr. Amit Kumar Pathak, plans symptom control together with any ongoing cancer treatment, and Dr. Maithili Thakur, anaesthesiologist and critical-care specialist, supports pain management around surgery and intensive care. When a patient becomes acutely unwell, with uncontrolled pain, severe vomiting, bleeding or breathlessness, the 24×7 emergency and ICU are on the same campus.

Families can also use the online onco-nutrition support on ZenOnco.io from home. Supportive care of this kind sits beside hospital treatment and never replaces surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy when those are advised.

Caring for the patient at home: practical tips

  • Give pain medicines on time, as prescribed, even if the patient feels fine at that moment. Keep a simple diary of doses and pain scores.
  • Offer small, frequent meals and fluids; soft food is easier when the mouth is sore.
  • Prevent constipation with fluids, fibre where possible and the laxatives prescribed.
  • Change position every few hours if the patient is in bed, to prevent pressure sores.
  • Keep all reports and the medicine list in one file, and save the hospital number in every family member's phone.
  • Take turns as caregivers. Looking after yourself is part of looking after the patient.

Call the hospital immediately for pain that is not controlled by the prescribed doses, vomiting that does not stop, fever, bleeding, sudden breathlessness, new weakness in the legs, or confusion.

Cost, Ayushman Bharat and financial help

The cost depends on the type and stage of cancer and the treatment the doctor recommends, so we do not quote a fixed price before the patient is seen. After the OPD consultation, the doctor explains the plan and our patient counsellor explains the costs before anything is booked.

  • Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) is accepted. Bring the Ayushman card and Aadhaar; the help desk checks eligibility and explains what the scheme covers for this treatment before admission.
  • Private cashless insurance is accepted. Bring the insurance e-card and photo ID.
  • NGO support: our NGO, Love Heals Cancer, supports patients who need financial help to complete treatment.
