Bladder Cancer: symptoms, tests and treatment
Bladder cancer often announces itself with painless blood in the urine. Most tumours are found early and can be removed through the urethra; some need stronger treatment or removal of the bladder. Smoking is the main preventable risk factor.

How bladder cancer is diagnosed
-
1
Urine tests and ultrasound
First checks for blood and to look at the kidneys and bladder.
-
2
Cystoscopy and biopsy
A camera in the bladder finds the tumour; samples confirm the type and grade.
-
3
CT urogram
Checks the upper urinary tract and for spread outside the bladder.
Treatment options
The right plan depends on the stage, the type of cancer and your overall health. Most patients receive more than one of these.
TURBT
Removal of the tumour through the urethra, the usual first treatment for non-muscle-invasive disease.
Intravesical therapy and chemotherapy
Medicines placed in the bladder, or systemic chemotherapy for higher-risk or advanced disease.
Surgery
Removal of the bladder (cystectomy) for muscle-invasive cancer, with a new way to store urine.
