Thyroid Cancer: symptoms, tests and treatment

Thyroid cancer usually presents as a painless lump in the front of the neck. Most types grow slowly and are cured with surgery. A fine-needle test (FNAC) and ultrasound decide whether the nodule needs removal.

Warning signs of thyroid cancer

  • A lump in the front of the neck that moves with swallowing
  • Hoarse voice lasting more than two weeks
  • Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of pressure in the neck
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck

These signs often have other causes. If one lasts more than two to three weeks, see a doctor and get it checked.

Who is at higher risk

  • Previous radiation to the neck (in childhood)
  • Family history of thyroid cancer
  • Certain genetic syndromes
  • Female sex (more nodules overall)
  • Iodine deficiency in some regions

How thyroid cancer is diagnosed

  1. 1

    Neck ultrasound

Shows the size and features of the nodule and any lymph nodes.

  2. 2

    FNAC (fine-needle aspiration)

A thin needle sample classifies the nodule and guides surgery.

  3. 3

    Thyroid function blood tests

Check whether the gland is over- or under-active; most thyroid cancers have normal hormone levels.

Treatment options

The right plan depends on the stage, the type of cancer and your overall health. Most patients receive more than one of these.

Surgery

Removal of half or all of the thyroid, sometimes with neck lymph nodes.

Hormone replacement

Thyroxine tablets after the gland is removed, adjusted with blood tests.

Referral for further treatment

Some patients need additional treatment after surgery at a partner centre; we continue follow-up and hormone adjustment here.

Common questions about thyroid cancer

No. Most nodules are benign. Ultrasound and FNAC decide which ones need surgery.

If the whole thyroid is removed, yes — daily thyroxine. Levels are checked with simple blood tests.

The common types (papillary and follicular) are cured in most patients with surgery and follow-up.
