Kidney Cancer: symptoms, tests and treatment

Warning signs of kidney cancer
- Blood in the urine (visible or on a urine test)
- Pain in the flank or side
- A mass felt in the abdomen
- Fever, weight loss or night sweats
- High blood pressure or anaemia without a clear cause
These signs often have other causes. If one lasts more than two to three weeks, see a doctor and get it checked.
Who is at higher risk

- High blood pressure
- Long-term dialysis
- Family syndromes such as von Hippel–Lindau
How kidney cancer is diagnosed

CT or MRI of the abdomen
Shows the size of the tumour and whether veins or lymph nodes are involved.

Chest imaging
Checks for spread to the lungs.

Biopsy
Sometimes done before drug treatment; often the diagnosis is confirmed after surgery.
Treatment options
The right plan depends on the stage, the type of cancer and your overall health. Most patients receive more than one of these.
Surgery
Partial or full removal of the kidney (nephrectomy), often the main treatment for localised disease.
Targeted therapy and immunotherapy
Used when the cancer has spread or cannot be fully removed.
Active surveillance
Selected for very small tumours in frail patients, with regular scans.
