Pancreatic Cancer: symptoms, tests and treatment

Pancreatic cancer is often found late because early symptoms are vague. Jaundice, back pain and weight loss are common presentations. A clear CT stage decides whether surgery is possible; chemotherapy is central for most patients.

How pancreatic cancer is diagnosed

  1. 1

    Triple-phase CT of the pancreas

Shows whether the tumour touches major blood vessels and whether it can be removed.

  2. 2

    CA 19-9 blood test

Supports the diagnosis and is used to follow treatment.

  3. 3

    Biopsy

Often taken through endoscopy (EUS) or CT guidance before chemotherapy.

Treatment options

The right plan depends on the stage, the type of cancer and your overall health. Most patients receive more than one of these.

Surgery referral

Whipple or distal pancreatectomy for operable tumours, performed at centres experienced in this surgery.

Chemotherapy

Given before or after surgery, or as the main treatment when the cancer cannot be removed.

Symptom relief

Stents for jaundice, pain control and nutrition support.
